NLCHP, ACLU File Suit to Protect Voting Rights in Wisconsin

MILWAUKEE, Wis. - December 13, 2011 - (RealEstateRama) -- The National Law Center on Homelessness & Poverty, the American Civil Liberties Union, and the ACLU of Wisconsin today filed a federal lawsuit charging that Wisconsin's voter ID law is unconstitutional and will deprive citizens of their basic right to vote. The lawsuit is the only active federal challenge against a photo ID law, the most common type of legislation that is part of a nationwide attack on the right to vote.

HUD CHARGES WISCONSIN LANDLORD WITH REFUSING TO RENT TO AFRICAN AMERICAN COUPLE

WASHINGTON, DC - September 23, 2011 - (RealEstateRama) -- The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) announced today that it has charged a La Crosse, Wisconsin landlord with violating the Fair Housing Act for refusing to rent an apartment to an African American couple because of their race. HUD brings the charge on behalf of the couple, alleging that Geneva Terrace, Inc. and Victoria Gerrard, the owner of Geneva Terrace Apartments, and property manager Nicolai Quinn refused to show an apartment to the complainants. Additionally, they falsely represented to the couple and other black applicants that no units were available, while informing white applicants of available units and encouraging them to apply.

Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen Announces National Mortgage Settlement Relief Exceeds...

Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen announced today that Wisconsin borrowers received $23.5 million in mortgage loan-related relief in the first quarter of 2013 under the National Mortgage Settlement. Adding to previously announced totals, 3,516 Wisconsin borrowers have now claimed $167,183,021 in loan-related relief. In addition, 106 Wisconsin borrowers are in trial mortgage modifications, which will add $8 million to the State’s relief in coming months – raising the projected total to more than $175 million statewide so far.
